App Store Chinese Screenshots: Localization Guide for China and Beyond
China is the second-largest iOS market by revenue. Here is how to get your screenshots into Simplified Chinese correctly — from script choice to CJK font rendering to design preferences.
China is the world's second-largest iOS market by revenue — a massive opportunity for any app willing to localize. While the domestic Chinese market is predominantly served by local Android app stores, the iOS App Store in China still represents extraordinary volume, and the Chinese diaspora across Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, and Chinese-speaking communities worldwide represents additional high-value storefronts reachable through Simplified and Traditional Chinese localizations.
Simplified vs. Traditional Chinese
Chinese uses two writing systems depending on geography:
- Simplified Chinese (zh-Hans) — used in Mainland China and Singapore. Characters have been simplified from traditional forms. This is what App Store Connect calls "Chinese, Simplified."
- Traditional Chinese (zh-Hant) — used in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau. Uses the original, more complex character forms. App Store Connect offers "Chinese, Traditional" as a separate localization.
These are not interchangeable. Showing Simplified Chinese to a Taiwanese user (or vice versa) is equivalent to showing the wrong regional variant — it is immediately apparent to native readers and signals a lack of care. If you are targeting both Mainland China and Taiwan/Hong Kong seriously, provide both Simplified and Traditional Chinese localizations.
Start with Simplified Chinese
Mainland China accounts for the vast majority of the combined Chinese-speaking iOS market. If you can only prioritize one, start with Simplified Chinese. Boom Screens supports Simplified Chinese localization.
CJK font rendering
Chinese characters (hanzi) require fonts with CJK glyph support — the same technical requirement as Japanese and Korean. Screenshot tools without embedded CJK fonts produce blank squares or failed renders for all Chinese text, making the screenshots unusable.
Boom Screens bundles CJK fonts with full Simplified and Traditional Chinese character coverage, rendered at native export resolution for all App Store device sizes.
Design preferences in the Chinese market
The Chinese App Store market responds to different design signals than Western markets:
- Information density is accepted. Chinese consumers are comfortable with more information on screen than typical Western app UX. Screenshots that would look cluttered to Western users may feel appropriately detailed to Chinese users.
- Red is a strongly positive color. In Chinese culture, red signals good fortune and celebration. It is not the "danger" color it often is in Western design contexts. Apps that use red as a primary brand color often perform well in China.
- Social proof signals carry weight. User counts, ratings, and "已有X万用户使用" (used by X million users) claims on screenshots are effective in China where social validation strongly influences purchase decisions.
- Feature depth over simplicity. Apps positioned as comprehensive solutions ("all-in-one") often convert better than apps positioned as single-purpose minimalist tools.
Character count and text length
Chinese is extremely meaning-dense. A four-character phrase (成语, chéngyǔ — a classical idiom) can convey a complex concept that takes a full English sentence to express. Marketing captions in Chinese are typically shorter in character count than their English equivalents, but they can convey the same or more meaning.
This has a practical implication for layout: if your screenshot design is sized around a long English caption, the Chinese version may leave significant empty space in the text area. Build your design to accommodate shorter text without looking sparse.
Storefronts covered by a Chinese localization
Simplified Chinese covers: China Mainland, Singapore.
Traditional Chinese covers: Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau — each its own App Store storefront.
Chinese-speaking communities in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia use their local country's App Store (which displays your English localization by default), but will see Chinese screenshots if you add them under the same language selector in App Store Connect.
Translation quality for marketing copy
AI translation of app marketing copy into Simplified Chinese is generally accurate for standard tech vocabulary. The main challenge is cultural resonance: phrasing that feels energetic in English can feel flat or awkward in direct translation. For your highest-value markets, have a native Chinese speaker review AI-translated caption copy before shipping.
