Google Play Screenshots: Complete Requirements & Best Practices 2026
Google Play's screenshot rules differ from the App Store in key ways — including a feature graphic most developers ignore. Here is every size, format, and policy requirement for 2026.
Google Play and the App Store look similar on the surface — both require screenshots, both display them on your listing page — but the requirements, formats, and best practices diverge in important ways. If you are shipping on both platforms, this guide covers everything you need for the Play Store side.
The feature graphic: your highest-impact asset
The feature graphic is a 1024 × 500 px banner that appears at the top of your Play Store listing and is used by Google when promoting apps across the store. It is required if you want your app to be considered for editorial featuring.
Design it as a standalone visual — do not assume it will always appear alongside your icon. Keep key content centered (the edges can be cropped on some surfaces), avoid small text, and treat it like a billboard: one clear visual, one clear message.
Most developers skip the feature graphic
It is one of the first assets Google's editorial team looks at when selecting apps to feature. A polished feature graphic is a low-effort signal that you take your Play Store presence seriously.
Phone screenshot requirements
Google Play gives more flexibility than the App Store on screenshot dimensions:
- Minimum 2 screenshots, maximum 8 per device type.
- Minimum 320 px on the shortest side; maximum 3840 px on the longest side.
- Aspect ratio must be 16:9 or 9:16 (portrait or landscape — not square).
- Format: PNG or JPEG; JPEG must not have an alpha channel.
The practical standard used by most developers is 1080 × 1920 px (portrait). This resolution displays cleanly at every Android screen density and is the same aspect ratio as most Android phones. For device-specific size details, see the Google Play device guide.
Tablet screenshots
Tablet screenshots are separate from phone screenshots and optional — but strongly recommended if your app has an adaptive or tablet-optimized layout.
- 7-inch tablets: minimum 1080 × 1920 px at a 16:9 or 9:16 ratio.
- 10-inch tablets: same requirements, typically displayed at a wider viewport.
Users browsing the Play Store on a tablet see tablet screenshots if you provide them. Without them, Google falls back to phone screenshots — which can look stretched or cropped at tablet proportions.
Portrait vs landscape: which to use
Portrait (9:16) is the standard for phone apps and the format most users expect. Landscape (16:9) makes sense for games, media players, and apps that run primarily in landscape mode.
Do not mix portrait and landscape in the same screenshot slot. If your first two screenshots are portrait and your third is landscape, it creates a jarring experience when users swipe.
What Google prohibits
- Misleading content — screenshots showing features the app does not actually have, or implying capabilities it lacks.
- Unrelated imagery — stock photos or visuals that do not represent the actual app experience.
- Third-party trademarks without written permission (other apps, logos, brand names).
- Mature content that does not match the app's content rating.
Violations can lead to listing suspension. When in doubt, show the real app.
Play Store vs App Store: key differences
- 1Feature graphic — Play Store requires one; the App Store has no equivalent.
- 2Flexible dimensions — Play Store accepts any size within the min/max bounds; the App Store requires exact pixel dimensions per device.
- 3No per-device size requirement — Play Store does not distinguish between phone models the way the App Store distinguishes 6.9", 6.5", 5.5".
- 4Up to 8 screenshots vs. up to 10 on the App Store.
Localizing your Play Store screenshots
Google Play Console supports per-language screenshot sets — just like App Store Connect. The principle is the same: screenshots in the user's own language convert significantly better than English-only screenshots in non-English markets.
Boom Screens exports at 1080 × 1920 px for Google Play alongside all required App Store sizes, with AI localization into all App Store Connect languages. One design, every platform, every language.
